These photographic prints document illustrations of the first people of Southern Africa, our Hunter-Gatherer’s, the San.
The history of these is truly immeasurable. For tens upon thousands of years they walked, bled, hurt, loved and prospered through the plains of Southern Africa, boundlessly. No-one individual ever above the other, they never above the Land, the Animal, the Skies, the Water, they never above the Insect.
A deep-rooted innate egalitarianism you and I can only merely read upon, converse upon, think upon and wish upon.
To define these rock-face illustrations as only art would be the perfect example of our true ignorance towards this ancient culture.
Much is to be said, studied and understood,
however,
their essence remains with them,
the Land, the Animal, the Skies, the Water, and the Insect.
With honour we share this beautiful history.
joyously, wilna.
this panel lies in the rural southern freestate, adjacent to the flow of the Orange river.
its isolation, its protection
a profound and private record of an ancient world
one of the most beautiful experiences one has when faced with the panel
is one of mystery, sadness, respect, honour and above all ignorance turned humility
this combination of feelings, for the curious human is an ethereal one
one where the art boasts an insatiable curiosity
sadness and respect prevails, only to later be met by ignorance
the complete ignorance experienced then made insignificant by everlasting humility
knowing that our curiosity will remain insatiable forever,
the true knowing, the true knowledge, if there ever was any, remains untold
modern man made insignificant
and this insignificance being the most honourable encounter,
leaving their knowledge with them, their land, their animal, their skies, their water, and their insect
